Reading

Reading at home is very important. Please encourage your child to read aloud on an evening and discuss what they have read. You can support your child by asking them questions about what they have read, help them to make predictions and explore what a character is thinking and feeling.

Please add a brief note (in the reading record) detailing the date and the page they have reached.

Homework

Spellings are set each Friday and should be practised at home for the test the following week.

It is really important that pupils work on their multiplication facts (times tables) at home. When working with your child, please remember that each fact must be learnt – For example:  3x5=15, 4x5=20.

We will be continuing to practise our recall of these times table facts in our Maths lessons. It would be really helpful if your child could practise the 2, 5 and 10 times tables at home to support their learning in class.

Please note: Each child has an account on ‘Times Tables Rockstars’ (login details can be found in the front of your child’s reading diary) that they can access at home - there is also a 'Times tables Rockstars' app that you can download to your phone or tablet https://www.ttrockstars.com. It is part of your child's weekly homework to engage with Times Table Rockstars.

We have now subscribed to Letterjoin and your child has a log in to allow them to explore all the learning tools on there.

PE

Tuesday (outdoor), Wednesday (Indoor)

Please note: Children should come to school in their PE kits on PE days and will spend all day in these. Children must take their earrings out for PE lessons.

Summer 1

Curriculum

English

In English, we will be reading a variety of Greek myths including Pandora's box. We will be writing our own narratives based on a Greek myth. We will also write a setting description about life in Ancient Greece and create persuasive letters to Zeus.

Maths

In Maths, we will continue to revise our knowledge and understanding of the four operations and practise our rapid recall of times tables facts. We will be learning about mass and capacity and how to use kilograms and grams as well as litres and millilitres as units of measurement. We will then move on to adding and subtracting fractions and finding a fraction of an amount.

Science

In Science, we will be learning about animals including humans. We will learn about the importance of nutrition and how humans and some other animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement.

Humanities

In History, we will be learning about Ancient Greece. We will find out who the Ancient Greeks were, where they lived and what life was like for them at the time. We will also learn about the origin of The Olympic Games, consider the impact that the Ancient Greeks have had upon us and how they are still remembered today.

Art / Design technology

In art, we will be creating our own clay pottery inspired by ancient Greek pottery. We will identify how artists used silhouette figures, decorative borders and frieze compositions to depict scenes from everyday life and mythology. We will also develop practical skills in sculpture through clay modelling, where we learn techniques such as rolling, pinching and joining.

PE

In indoor PE, we will be learning about dance. We will practise and put together a performance using facial expressions and props. In outdoor PE, we will be learning how to work as part of a team and use clear communication to develop our orienteering skills.

PE Kit

INDOOR: Plain white t-shirt and black shorts.
OUTDOOR: Plain white t-shirt, plain black or grey tracksuit bottoms/ joggers, plain black or grey tracksuit top/ sweatshirt and trainers. No earrings for PE.

Computing

In Computing, we will be looking at databases, specifically branching databases. We will analyse what a branching database is, explore different branching databases and then create one of our own.

Other -

In music, we will re-cap what we know about musical notation and compositions. We will listen to some English folk songs, and we will practise making different rhythmic patterns using the recorder. We will also create our own compositions and perform our own songs.

In Spanish, we will learn 10 common shapes and also the numbers 1-5 in Spanish. By the end of the unit we will be able to recognise, recall, remember and spell up to 10 shape nouns.

In PSHE, we will learn about how to work cooperatively with others. We will be focusing on understanding that people often need to play / work together to reach a shared outcome and to share their opinions on things that matter to them.
