Reading

Reading at home is very important. Please encourage your child to read aloud on an evening and discuss what they have read. You can support your child by asking them questions about what they have read, help them to make predictions and explore what a character is thinking and feeling. 

Please add a brief note (in the reading record) detailing the date and the page they have reached. 

Homework

Spellings are set each Friday and should be practised at home for the test the following week.

Homework will be set each Monday. 

It is really important that pupils work on their multiplication facts (times tables) at home. When working with your child, please remember that each fact must be learnt – For example:  3x5=15, 4x5=20.

We will be continuing to practise our recall of these times table facts in our Maths lessons. It would be really helpful if your child could practise the 2, 5 and 10 times tables at home to support their learning in class. 

Please note: Each child has an account on ‘Times Tables Rockstars’ (login details can be found in the front of your child’s reading diary) that they can access at home - there is also a 'Times tables Rockstars' app that you can download to your phone or tablet https://www.ttrockstars.com. It is part of your child's weekly homework to engage with Times Table Rockstars.

We have now subscribed to Letterjoin and your child has a log in to allow them to explore all the learning tools on there. 

PE

Please note: Children should come to school in their PE kits on PE days and will spend all day in these. Children must take their earrings out for PE lessons.

Autumn 2

Curriculum

English

In English, we will be reading Charlotte’s Web. We will be focusing on descriptive writing by describing characters and settings which link to Charlotte’s Web. We will then move on to writing our own extract of an adventure narrative. We will finish the half-term by writing a set of instructions for the Grinch on how to steal Christmas.

Maths

In Maths, we will be revising our knowledge and understanding of the four operations and practising our rapid recall of times table facts. We will start by continuing to learn about addition and subtraction, focusing on the column addition and subtraction method. We will then move on to our multiplication and division unit, where there will be a large focus on the 3, 4 and 8 times table.

Science

In Science, we will be learning about rocks. We will learn how to compare and group together different kinds of rocks based on their appearance and simple physical properties, describe in simple terms how fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped within rock and recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter. 

Humanities

In Geography, we will be learning about settlements. We will look at children’s geographical understanding of human settlements over time, starting with the earliest Stone Age farmers. We will also learn about the importance of farming and the basic needs for human survival. We will then learn about trade which helps support children’s understanding of how people made money or exchanged resources for survival or interest.

Art / Design technology

In DT, we will be designing and making a model Iron Age roundhouse. We will begin by analysing roundhouses as pre-existing products, focusing on materials, construction techniques and how different parts work together. Then we will practise templating, measuring, cutting, drilling and weaving before planning their own model using annotated sketches. We will then construct a roundhouse using a square wooden base, circular footprint, dowelling posts, woven wattle, clay-effect daub and a cone roof with a thatch effect.

PE

In indoor PE, we will be learning about  handball. We will learn how to show basic passing and catching skills, learn basic defensive techniques and implement the rules of handball.

In outdoor PE, we will be learning football. We will learn how to show basic control skills, send the ball with some accuracy to maintain possession, build attacking play and implement the basic rules of football.

PE Kit

INDOOR: Plain white t-shirt and black shorts. 
OUTDOOR: Plain white t-shirt, plain black or grey tracksuit bottoms/ joggers, plain black or grey tracksuit top/ sweatshirt and trainers. No earrings for PE.

Computing

In Computing, we will start by looking at internet safety and the importance of being safe inside. We will then move on to looking at spreadsheets, where we will learn to use formulae and functions to organise and analyse data effectively.

Other -

In Spanish, we will be learning the knowledge and skills to introduce ourselves, count to ten and begin to learn the names of different colours.  

In PSHE, we will continue to follow the ‘One Life’ scheme. We will be learning about our response system and understanding that our mind and body work together to keep us safe. We will be practising how to develop  a strong response system to help us respond and not react to build our resilience. We will then move on to understanding kind and respectful relationships and setting boundaries.
