Mathematics at Whitecote Primary School

At Whitecote Primary School we believe strongly in the importance of children becoming fluent and accurate with their knowledge of number and the number system. We work hard to ensure that children leave our school being sufficiently fluent in number and the number system, whilst also providing challenge through rich, problem solving and reasoning tasks.

We believe in the importance of teaching children maths in a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach. This means that children of all ages are given the chance to use concrete equipment to support their learning, before moving onto pictorial representations and abstract approaches. 

National Curriculum

As a school we follow the Primary National Curriculum 2014.

The expectation is that the majority of pupils will move through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly are challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content. Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material consolidate their understanding, including through additional practice, before moving on.

• Properties of shapes
• Position and direction

• Ratio and proportion (year 6)
