Autumn 1 - Events & Trips

We have had a busy first half term in Year 3! One of our highlights from this term was our Stone Age Hook Day. We enjoyed making clay necklaces and hunting in the forest.

Reading

Reading at home is very important. Please encourage your child to read aloud on an evening and discuss what they have read. You can support your child by asking them questions about what they have read, help them to make predictions and explore what a character is thinking and feeling.

Please add a brief note (in the reading record) detailing the date and the page they have reached.

Homework

Spellings are set each Friday and should be practised at home for the test the following week.

It is really important that pupils work on their multiplication facts (times tables) at home. When working with your child, please remember that each fact must be learnt – For example:  3x5=15, 4x5=20.

We will be continuing to practise our recall of these times table facts in our Maths lessons. It would be really helpful if your child could practise the 2, 5 and 10 times tables at home to support their learning in class.

Please note: Each child has an account on ‘Times Tables Rockstars’ (login details can be found in the front of your child’s reading diary) that they can access at home - there is also a 'Times tables Rockstars' app that you can download to your phone or tablet https://www.ttrockstars.com.

PE

Wednesday (Indoor), Thursday (outdoor)

Please note: Children should come to school in their PE kits on PE days and will spend all day in these.

Autumn 2 - Iron Age & Bronze Age

Curriculum

English
In writing, we will continue to learn about different elements of grammar that will improve our writing, including fronted adverbials of time, place, and cause. We will also be looking at the use of ‘a/an’ for nouns, and how to use speech marks to denote dialogue. We will be looking at different books including Stone Age Boy and
The Firework Maker’s Daughter.
Maths
In maths, we will continue to develop our fluency skills with numbers up to 1000. We will apply this to various number problems as well as reasoning questions. Children will also continue to develop their mathematical knowledge of various timetables, building on their knowledge of 2s, 5s, and 10s from Year 2 and moving into 3s, 4s, and 8s.
Science
In Science, we will be looking at different types of rocks and learning new vocabulary (sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic) and we will also be investigating soils and researching the famous Mary Anning the first archaeologist.
Humanities
In humanities, we will be looking at geography. In particular, we will be looking at different types of settlements, including the stone-age settlement of Skara Brae. We will then take a journey through time to look at how modern settlements and land are used.
Art / Design Technology
In Art, we will be drawing still life of humans and plants. As well as, understanding the process of being an artist. We will explain how we will make our own still life pieces using plants. We will practise drawing, look at tone and composition.
PE
In PE, we will be learning about the sport ‘Handball’. We will learn how to throw and catch balls, as well as dodge and evade them. This will teach us about how to play a game with simple rules. In outdoor PE, we will be learning how to play football, including some simple passing and moving strategies.                                                             Music & PSHE                                                                                                                                                                                            In Music, we will use the Charanga music scheme, as well as continuing to learn the recorder. In PSHE, we will be learning about bullying, and how to keep safe from bullies. We will also learn how to report bullying if we think that we have witnessed it.

Spelling

Spellings will be learnt and tested each week. Usually, the lists will be given out each half-term.

This term, we will be using Emile (https://emile-education.com) to support the teaching and learning of spellings. Please support your child by helping them to learn their spellings at home. Here are the spellings for the first half-term (September 2024). Please note that some children may be given an individual set of spellings rather than the ones below.
