Whitecote Art Club

We are very excited to have started an art club in school. Each half term a different year group will get the opportunity to join our art club to develop their skills and create a range of different artworks.

This half term, year 1 have been developing their skills in line and tone. This skill experimentation will then result in a self portrait where they will apply their new skills. Watch this space!

Here are a few examples of the developmental work they have been doing.

Year 1: Line and tone development

Year 3 Printing

Year 3 have been learning about differnt types of prints and patterns. We experimented with block prints and styrofoam prints and evaluated both techniques. The children learnt about how to refine their work looking at what did and didnt work well in their final pieces.

Curriculum Intent Statement

Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination and is a form of expression and communication. Whitecote children will be given the freedom to explore, create and develop ideas, whilst developing key concepts and skills such as line, shape, form and colour. They will learn about a range of artists, craft makers and designers from past and present to support their understanding of art and its role in the world. We aim to inspire, nurture and challenge children to express their individuality.

Burley Banksy Collaborations

We have been lucky enough to have had 2 collaborations with the fantastic Burley Banksy. He first came into Year 4 to support them with the Street Art project. The children looked at abstract paintings from South America and created their own abstract self portrait in bold colours, replicating this style. Banksy supported them in making stencils to add their design elements and also 'tag' style words and phrases to their pieces. Once completed the children's work has been hung in our school grounds for us all to celebrate.

Bramley landmark tiles

Banksy has recently been with us to bring to a close our 'Bramley and us' scheme of work the children have been enjoying whole school. This scheme gives the children a chance to learn more about their home town and took a geography focus looking at key landmarks. The children spent time observing and sketching these landmarks before creating a stencil to create a simplified abstract version for their tile. These will then be mounted on our outdoor entrance wall for all families to enjoy.

Yr 4 Street Art Project

Remembrance Day

We have recently completed a whole school scheme of work focusing on Remembrance Day. This art work was linked with our history curriculum. The result being a school assembly where children read poems and presented their artwork in a combined form.

The children were all asked to design and make a peg doll soldier. Alongside their learning about War, they looked into uniforms and colours to help support their soldier design. The skills were differentiated through the year groups so that each year group could create their dolls at their level, from Nursery to Year 6. When completed the dolls were displayed at the front of our assembly in an 'army' for the children to understand the sense of scale of the size of an army and the loss of life. 

Bramley Sketching project

Here are some examples of the children's sketching from the start of the year. They were tasked in sketching buildings in their local area. The sketches were done from Year 1 up to Year 6. What a fantastic job they did!

Sketchbooks

Sketchbooks are such an important resource in Art. They allow the children to develop skills and express their creativity in so many different ways. We teach our children to use their sketchbooks as a journey - it is not the outcome necessarily that is important but the journey they take to get there. You could continue this exploration with a sketchbook at home for the children to express their ideas and thoughts in. They really enjoy taking ownership of them, doodling in them and trying out new skills. The best thing about them though, is there is no right or wrong.

Across all year groups children develop their skills through 8 key concepts:

These examples show children in a range of year groups exploring and developing their knowledge of line, colour and pattern.

Art Week

In school we have recently undertaken an ‘Art Week’.

For this, the children in each year group were asked to create a different outcome for the topic of ‘climate change’. We felt this is a very current and important topic for the whole school to learn about from Little Doves up to year 6. Each year group looked at a different aspect of climate change and created artwork in response to this. The artwork varies across the year groups. Some year groups created 3D sculptures, some created collages and some have created large scale collaborative pieces. All year groups have built on the skills that they have been learning in class over the year to create these pieces.

We then celebrated our pieces by holding an exhibition in our school so the children could showcase their artwork to their friends and family.
