School Vision for PE and School Sport

The intent for our PE curriculum is to develop physical and mental resilience through the development, practice and refinement of skills and knowledge, incorporating engagement in competitive sport.

Our aim is also for children to enjoy being active in different ways for longer periods of time and to understand how this positively impacts on their physical and mental health.

PE Curriculum

In Physical Education children take part in a wide range of both indoor and outdoor activities. Through these activities children are able to develop their fundamental movement skills, such as agility, balance and co-ordination, but they also have the opportunity to improve their personal, social and emotional development and learn about good sportsmanship. At Whitecote children learn that being active is fun and that it is important to take part in an active lifestyle. Children from years 1 to 6 take part in 2 PE lessons each week, which take place both indoors and outdoors. Year 4 children also take part in weekly swimming lessons which are held at Bramley Baths, where the programme includes water confidence, safety and stroke technique. Children in Early Years have free-flow access to an outdoor area which is equipped to promote physical activity. Reception children also have one indoor PE lesson each week.

In the Early Years, children are provided with access to an outdoor area and equipment which promotes physical activity. This provides physical challenge within the areas of balance, co-ordination and control. Children are encouraged to move safely in a range of ways.

In Key Stage 1, children take part in dance, games, athletics and gymnastics.

In Key Stage 2, children take part in dance, games, swimming, athletics and gymnastics.

PE and Sport Premium

The Primary PE and Sport Premium is an initiative that aims to help increase and improve the PE and sporting opportunities for children. It was first provided in the 2013/14 academic year and the current government has pledged to continue this funding until 2020.

In 2020/21, Whitecote received £19,230 from the government. These funds were used in variety of ways to improve the quality of PE and to increase opportunities for different physical activities for the children at Whitecote. Click on the files below for further details on this.

Outdoor Learning and Physical Activity

A range of outdoor learning sessions will be planned for each year group throughout the year. These will support teaching and learning across the curriculum. The aim of this is to engage children in physical activity by utilising our outdoor space more effectively. Outdoor learning also allows children to learn in a more physical and immersive way, which should lead to the learning being retained more readily. This will also support the children's mental health and wellbeing.
