Phonics

Here at Whitecote we use the Phonics Programme ‘Floppy’s Phonics’. This is taught from Reception to Year 2 daily. It is also used for interventions and stand alone sessions throughout the rest of school, in KS2.

Children enjoy the routine and structure of the sessions to learn new pieces of code and how to implement their reading routine to help them become more fluent readers. The programme also supports spelling and introduces alternative spelling patterns of ways to make the same sound.

Children are given texts to take home and read that match their Phonic ability and gives them the chance to practise what they have learnt in class. The corresponding sound sheets are also sent home for further practise and for parents and carers to have an insight into the learning taking place in school. Children also have access at home to the ‘Oxford Owls’ website which we use as part of the sessions in school. It has a bank of interactive screens and games linked to the code being taught. In addition to this they have access to a bank of ebooks which can be read at home or as directed to by the class teacher if children are having to complete home learning. Log in details for this can be found on the learning platforms Tapestry or Class Dojo.
